I planted my first holly hedge mostly for privacy. I did not expect to fall in love with the plant itself, but years later, I still notice something new about it every winter. Holly is one of those shrubs people think they know, then discover they barely scratched the surface. The genus Ilex contains 564…
I still remember the first time a lilac hedge stopped me mid-walk. The scent hit before I even saw the flowers, and I have been hooked on this shrub ever since. Lilacs are deceptively diverse. Most people picture one purple bush, but the genus actually spans dwarf shrubs, towering trees, and colors from snow white…
I still remember the first time I saw a Black Lace Elderberry in a neighbor’s front bed. From a distance, I genuinely mistook it for a Japanese maple. Up close, the lacy, almost-black foliage and the soft pink flower clusters told a different story altogether. That mix of curiosity and admiration is exactly what this…
Most gardeners think of shrubs as pretty backdrops for flower beds. I used to see them the same way, until I started planting a few that actually feed me. Now half my “ornamental” border is something I can eat, brew, or preserve. Edible shrubs deserve more attention. They take up less space than fruit trees,…
If you’ve ever tried gardening near the ocean, or even along a street that gets salted every winter, you know the struggle. Salt creeps into the soil, sprays onto leaves, and slowly kills off plants that just aren’t built for it. I’ve seen entire hedges turn brown and crispy after one bad winter of road…
There’s something magical about walking outside and being greeted by a wave of sweet perfume before you even see the plant responsible. Fragrance adds a whole new dimension to a garden, one that photos and even videos can never capture. I’ve planted a few scented shrubs over the years, and I can tell you, the…
Winter has a way of stripping a garden down to bare bones. One day you have a lush, green backdrop, and the next, it’s all twigs and silence. If you’ve ever stood at your window in January wishing for a bit of color and life outside, you’re not alone. That’s exactly why cold hardy evergreen…
Red tip photinia (Photinia × fraseri) is a hybrid evergreen shrub in the rose family, Rosaceae. It is a cross between the Japanese photinia (Photinia glabra) and the Chinese photinia (Photinia serrulata). The genus name Photinia comes from the Greek word photeinos, meaning “shining” — a fitting reference to the plant’s glossy leaves. The species…
Most gardeners think of spring as the peak flower season. But summer is where shrubs truly shine. While spring bulbs fade and perennials take a pause, summer-blooming shrubs fill the gap with weeks — sometimes months — of continuous colour. They also offer more than beauty. Many attract pollinators, provide nesting cover for birds, and…
Pink is one of the most versatile colors in a garden. It can be soft and romantic, bold and dramatic, or somewhere beautifully in between. Whether you are redesigning a backyard,, or simply looking for something new to plant, shrubs with pink flowers are among the best choices you can make. I have spent years…
