Houseplant Pests

Insect pests are a common problem that many gardeners face. Pests can cause damage to the leaves, stems, and roots of plants. This can lead to stunted growth, yellowing, wilting, or even death.

There are several types of insects that commonly infest cactus and other houseplants, and they include:

  1. Spider mites: These are tiny insects nearly invisible to the naked eye. They are known for feeding on sap and producing fine webbing on the plant.
  2. Mealybugs: They are small, soft-bodied insects that produce white cottony masses on leaves and stems and roots of a plant. They feed on plant sap resulting in a deterioration of the plant.
  3. Scale insects: These are small, round or oval-shaped insects that appear as brown, yellow or black bumps on the leaves or stems of plants. They also feed on plant sap.
  4. Whiteflies: They are tiny, moth-like insects often found in clusters on the undersides of leaves. They suck sap from the plants, which can cause yellowing, stunted growth, and wilting.
  5. Fungus gnats: These are small insects the size of fruit flies common on houseplants. Females lay their eggs in potting media or decomposing compost. Their larvae actively feed on root sap and may cause health problems to the plant.
  6. Aphids: Aphids are small soft-bodies  insects that feed on plant sap. They can range in color from green to black. Their damage on plants can cause leaf curling, yellowing, and stunted growth.

Houseplant insect pests can be prevented  by maintaining proper watering and lighting conditions, keeping plants clean and free from debris, and regularly inspecting plants for signs of infestation. Treatment options include using neem oil or insecticidal soaps.
