Cactus Care

Cacti are a type of succulent plants known their ability to survive in hot and dry conditions. They have unique and interesting shapes that makes gardeners and plant enthusiasts to love them. Holiday cacti in particular produces colcorful blooms around the winter holidays.

It is relatively easy to care for a cactus plant, but there are a few conditions you have to meet for them to thrive including:

  • Bright light: Cacti require bright, direct sunlight for at least six hours per day in order to thrive. Place your cactus near an east or  south-facing window or outside in a sunny spot.
  • Infrequent watering: Cacti are adapted to arid areas and therefore require infrequent watering. Overwatering can lead to root rot and other problems.Only water it when the soil is completely dry. 
  • Well-draining soil: Cacti require well-draining soil that allows excess water to drain away from the roots quickly. A mixture of potting soil and sand or perlite is a good option for planting or repotting a cactus.
  • Warm temperature: Cacti prefer warm temperatures and should be kept above 50°F (10°C). It’s important to keep your cactus away from cold drafts or windows during the winter months.
  • Occasional Fertilization: Cacti can benefit from occasional fertilization during the growing season (spring and summer). Use a balanced fertilizer diluted to half strength every four to six weeks.
  • Inspect for insect pests: Cacti are generally resistant to pests, but mealybugs and spider mites can be a problem. Check your cactus regularly for signs of infestation and treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap as directed on the product label.
  • Pruning and propagation: Cacti can be pruned to remove damaged or diseased growth, or to shape the plant. The cuttings can also be used in growing more plants. Use a clean, sharp knife to make cuts and allow the cut surface to callus over before watering..

Under right care, cacti are long-lived and low-maintenance plants that can add a unique touch to any indoor or outdoor space.
